Narcissus and Echo: the mirror and the voice

Narcissus and Echo: the mirror and the voice

The myth tells of Narcissus, a beautiful youth who rejects the love of the nymph Echo. Already cursed by Hera to repeat only the last words of others, Echo wastes away from grief until only her voice remains, the echo we still hear today. Narcissus later leans over a spring and falls in love with his own reflection, not recognizing himself. Unable to possess the image, he dies of hunger and thirst. From his body springs the flower that bears his name. The prophecy of Tiresias: “If he never knows himself, he will live long”, is fulfilled. Ovid’s version explores the limits of love: Narcissus represents self-enclosed identity, Echo represents voiceless otherness, showing that true love cannot arise between them.
