Arachne: the weaver who defied Athena

Arachne: the weaver who defied Athena

Arachne was a weaver of humble origins endowed with extraordinary talent, capable of creating tapestries that seemed the work of a goddess. But her skill was accompanied by a dangerous pride: she dared to challenge Athena, goddess of wisdom and the arts, declaring that her art was superior to hers. The goddess, after offering her a chance to repent in the guise of a wise old woman, accepted the challenge. At the end of the contest, Arachne's tapestry was perfect, better than the goddess's. But Athena, blinded by wrath, tore it apart and struck the young woman on the forehead. Arachne, humiliated, tried to hang herself, but the goddess transformed her into a spider, condemning her to weave for eternity. The myth speaks of an impassable boundary between the human and the divine, and of how art, even when it becomes a prison, always finds a way to survive.
