The line challenge: the showdown of who could see the thinnest line

The line challenge: the showdown of who could see the thinnest line

In the 4th century BC, the famous painter Apelles travels to Rhodes to meet his rival Protogenes. Finding him absent, he draws an extremely thin line on a canvas. Protogenes returns, recognizes the master, and adds an even thinner line. Apelles comes back and with a third colour draws a line so fine that it leaves no space, winning the challenge. The two embrace and become lifelong friends. This story, passed down by Pliny, celebrates the obsessive pursuit of technical perfection, the ability to see the invisible, and the noble rivalry that turns competitors into brothers in art.
