The lady of the mirror

The lady of the mirror

The lady of Shalott lives imprisoned in a tower, condemned to see the world only through the reflection of a mirror, weaving tapestries of what she sees. Her existence is safe but made of shadows. One day, the passing of Lancelot makes her weary of that mediated life: she wants reality, not its reflection. She turns towards the window, looks the knight in the face, and the curse falls upon her. The mirror cracks, the tapestry tears, she dies. But in dying, she chooses to truly live, even if only for an instant. The myth is a hymn to art that feeds on appearances and to the irrepressible desire to cross the threshold, paying its price.
