The mystery of Van Gogh's ear

The mystery of Van Gogh's ear

On December 23, 1888, in Arles, the difficult cohabitation between Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin reaches its breaking point. Vincent, already emotionally fragile and terrified at the idea of being abandoned after learning of his brother Theo's marriage, experiences a night of profound crisis. At the height of a furious quarrel, Van Gogh finds himself with almost his entire left ear severed. For over a century, the official story spoke of an act of madness, but recent discoveries and forgotten documents shed a completely new light on those events, rewriting what we thought we knew. After handing that macabre package to a woman he knew from a brothel, Vincent transforms his pain into art. In the following months, he paints famous self-portraits with the bandage, proving that his greatness lay in his ability to sublimate trauma into immortal masterpieces.
