The royal wedding at the Palace of Versailles

The royal wedding at the Palace of Versailles

On 16 May 1770, at Versailles, the official marriage between Marie Antoinette of Austria and Louis Auguste, heir to the throne of France, was celebrated. The day opened with a brilliant sun, welcomed as a sign from heaven. The young Dauphine, barely fourteen years old, prepared in the temporary apartments, wearing a white and silver brocade dress. In the presence of Louis XV, the courtiers and an exultant crowd, the ceremony took place in the royal chapel with all honours. But at the moment of signing the contract, an incident shook everyone: a large black splash of ink stained the parchment precisely on the Dauphine's signature, interpreted as an unsettling omen. A day of splendour and hope that already harboured the shadow of destiny.
